Thank You’s and Amens!
Please accept my humble thank you’s for all your well wishes and get well cards following my recent health issue. While my body feels OK, I still am not fully recovered from the kick that my body gave me. With a broader perspective on both the down side and up side of this existence, I can only feel so blessed and special. I thought that I had been doing all the right things that would increase my life’s margins, but I was proven wrong. Now, I am getting back up and getting my momentum back. I know that there are a lot more people out there living a lot closer to the edge and would never let anyone know. I am so grateful and feel so blessed and lucky to be on this side. Thank you all.
Warmly,
David
Swimming Advisory Issued for Cape Story and First Landing State Park
The city’s health department has issued a swimming and wading advisory for the Chesapeake Bay between Wake Forest and Kendall streets because of bacteria levels in the water.
The advisory includes the First Landing State Park coastline along the bay. It does not affect the Oceanfront.
Recent tests by the health department found bacteria levels exceeded State Water Quality Standards, according to a news release.
Signs will be posted on the beach.

First Chic’s Beach neighborhood surf and turf : Paddleboard race and run
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va.—Chesapeake Beach Civic League will hold the first CXB 5k & Paddleboard Classic, a paddleboard race and fun-run dubbed a “surf and turf” in the spirit of the historic Low Rent Regatta beginning at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, June 7, 2014 to benefit civic league special events and the community.
The race course encompasses the neighborhood of Chesapeake Beach (Chic’s Beach) along the Chesapeake Bay. A family and community event, the 5 km race begins at HK on the Bay at 8:30 a.m. The first of the stand up paddleboard (SUP) portions beginning immediately after at Buoy 44 on the beach. The SUP portion will have four waves of start times 10:30 a.m. (men 14 feet and below class), 10:45 a.m. (women 14 feet and below), 11:00 a.m. (juniors 14 feet and below), 11:15 a.m. (legends 14 feet and below). Racers may participate in the portion of their choice or the whole surf and turf event of road and paddleboard race. Board-less paddlers may rent boards the for the day of the race from CXB Paddle Company by calling 757 323-0201. For more information go to http://www.CXBcivicleague.org or the CXB 5K & Paddleboard Classic Facebook event site. Racers register at https://.raceit.com/Register/?event=27344, volunteers may register at https://www.raceit.com/Register/?event=27361 or go to Race-IT at http://www.raceit.com and search zip code 23455.
Mike Hopkins, Chic’s Beach resident, has had the idea of a neighborhood race since moving to the area in 2007 and participating in organized races, running for fitness and pleasure. “I’ve always wanted to have a 5k in my neighborhood so that runners from other areas would get to feel that same spirit that propelled the Low Rent Regatta success all those years ago,” said Hopkins.
Erin Hazlett and Bart Elling owners of CXB Paddle Company, also Chic’s Beach residents, joined with their SUP experience rounding out the surf and turf concept. “This event, to me, is a beautiful fusion of the things I am most passionate about: the one-of-a-kind, supportive community of Chic’s Beach that I am proud to call home; the dream job that has become a reality and the true love I have for the sport of paddleboarding,” said Hazlett.
The civic league, led by President T.J. Morgan, unanimously voted to support the event promoting community spirit and participation. The referenced Low Rent Regatta began in the 1970’s as a spoof of a more professional catamaran race at the oceanfront. In the laid-back spirit of the bay beaches, Low Rent vessels merely needed floating capability to participate, making the race accessible to everyone. The popular race ran for about 20 years from the beaches near the former Alexander’s on the Bay—now Buoy 44.
Current sponsors of the CXB 5k & Paddleboard Classic include Chic’s Beach Grill, The Lagoon, Froggies Cantina by the Bay, HK on the Bay, Buoy 44, CXB BBQ, CXB Paddle Company, Wilbanks, Smith & Thomas Asset Management, Chix Beach Gym and Cider Tires.

The purpose of this parking survey was to locate the illegal no parking signs, misplaced signs, illegal encroachments, and those legal no parking signs that are no longer needed due to changes over the years in this area.

THE RUNNER
I’m here for you in Virginia Beach to pay homage to your name.
I see Gold Star Families crying their pride can’t ease the pain.
There’s a beautiful sunrise over the sea; a new day has begun.
One that will be filled with promise as you and I begin to run.I’ll run with you to Arlington from Virginia’s southern shore.
To HONOR and REMEMBER the sacrifice you made in war.
It’s a long journey, yet there will be a tribute in every stride.
For you will be my inspiration as your spirit runs by my side.Patriots shepherd me down the path with flashing lights ablaze.
Keeping me safe to honor you over four of my proudest days.
Over the inland waterways, crossing many bridges far and wide.
To place a flag in your cherished memory on the other side.Winding through many towns I can hear the roaring cheers.
They’re for you my fallen comrades and so are all the tears.
Passing by a grateful nation, I see their pride begin to swell.
Reaffirming my belief the American Spirit is alive and well.Farewell my fallen comrades you were beside me from the start.
Your memories are in my thoughts, your sacrifice in my heart.
I’m humbled by your presence and honored to be here too.
Next year I’ll be back in Virginia Beach to run again with you.

Public Comment meeting to be held by Virginia Beach’s Commission on Historic Preservation
The Historic Preservation Commission of the City of Virginia Beach will hold its Annual Meeting at 6:30 this evening at Central Library to hear comments and answer questions from the public following a panel discussion about the status and plans of the “Cape Henry Historic Site.”
In advance of a public comment meeting to be held by Virginia Beach’s Commission on Historic Preservation tomorrow evening, I’ve written a relatively brief summary, which could be considered “Virginia Beach History 101,” mainly to acquaint the public and city leaders with various proposals and options regarding the preservation (and promotion) of Virginia Beach’s Cape Henry area. The meeting is, many believe, an important first step toward meeting persistent demands from various local, state, national and international organizations halfway, and for those even remotely interested, it is important.
If you are unable to attend (6:30 PM, Thursday, April 3rd, Central Library of Virginia Beach), then your comment is / comments are more important than ever. Please take the time to make your opinion known to those who will be present, particularly if it provokes thought about the proposals already proffered in the article. (And don’t be afraid to suggest your own.)
There’s a great deal of ancillary reference material; all of it interesting reading; most of it rarely seen. As time is of the essence, you will want to “pick your clicks” wisely. You can always return to the article later.
Much thanks…
