Special Presentation – Storm Water Improvements for Shore Drive Area

Mr. Mike Bumbaco, Project Manager with the City’s Public Works/Water Resources Department, will provide updates on the current storm water projects being worked in our area.  He will also discuss additional plans that are in the design phase and could benefit from public input.  The improvements could carry a price tag of $60+ million.  Some of the topics to be covered will include:

  • Sluice Gate installation in Cape Story and Lynnhaven Colony.  How they operate and project timeline.
  • Pump house upgrade at Poinciana in Cape Story
  • Storm water improvements for areas north of Shore Drive
  • Large collection pound for current treed area near Page Ave. and Shore Drive
  • What types of systems could be used along Shore Drive, large pipes and pump stations or gravity drains?

The Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center, in partnership with Goodwill Industries, the City of Virginia Beach Public Works and TFC Recycling, will offer its semi-annual E-cycling event Saturday, January 28, 2017, from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. at the Virginia Aquarium East Parking Lot. There is no fee to drop off items, but donations are always appreciated.

Acceptable personal electronic recyclable items include:

  • Personal computers and laptops
  • Telephones, cell phones and PDA’s
  • Printers
  • Circuit boards and components
  • Monitors and flat screens CRT TVs (Cathode Ray Tube TVs) – MUST be smaller than 32”* Flat Screen TVs
  • Fax machines
  • Stereo equipment and game systems
  • Regular recycling materials such as newspapers, bottles and cans will also be accepted.

Acceptable household hazardous waste items include:

SDCC Vote on Proposed Shore Drive to Oceanfront Shuttle – Membership will vote on proposed trial bus service between Shore Drive and Oceanfront that will operate between May and September 2017.

SDCC Vote on Proposed Friends of Live Oaks (FOLO) Proposal – FOLO is requesting support to save the City’s largest Live Oak grove currently located on City owned property. 

Light Rail Funds to Support Storm Water Improvements – City Council is entertaining the idea of redirecting funds appropriated for Light Rail to help make $500 million worth of storm water improvements.  What do SDCC members think about this proposal?

Special Presentation –  Update on Proposed Bus Shuttle between Shore Drive and the Oceanfront

Mr. Shea will provide an update on the proposed HRT bus shuttle between Shore Drive and the Oceanfront.  He will discuss cost estimates, stop locations, stop frequencies, dates of operation and next steps for this 2017 trial route.  Question and answers will follow the presentation

The presentation will be part of the SDCC general meeting which takes place at the Ocean Park Volunteer Rescue Squad on Monday November 28th at 7:30pm.

Old Business-

Marina Shores Proposed Development – According to the City Planners, the developer is in discussions with the Army Corps of Engineers (ACOE) regarding possible environmental impacts that may result from the required emergency road on the east side of the development.  Any ACOE approval will have to be run through the City and we will be informed if the proposal moves forward.

Ocean Bay Homes Proposed Development – The property at Shore Drive and Roanoke Ave. in Ocean Park has been requested to be rezoned to allow 8 townhomes be built where HM Boats is currently located.  The Planning Commission is scheduled to hear the deferred proposal at their Oct. 12th hearing.

Beach Event Houses – Update from the Beaches & Waterways Commission overseeing this evaluation.

Online Home Sharing Economy Ad Hoc Committee – Wed. Sept 28th meeting to be held at 6pm at City Council chamber at City Hall, 2401 Courthouse Drive.  The committee is expected to finalize its policy recommendations at the meeting. The City Council is tentatively scheduled to hear a presentation from the committee on Oct. 4, and to hear public comments and vote on the recommendations Oct. 18.

Civic Engagement – What housing issues do you believe Virginia Beach residents face?

What housing issues do you believe Virginia Beach residents face? Deadline: 5:00 PM on September 16, 2016

The Virginia Center for Housing Research at Virginia Tech and czb, LLC, a neighborhood planning firm, are currently conducting a housing study for the City of Virginia Beach. The study will provide information on the city’s household demographics, housing stock, homeownership and rental rates, neighborhood characteristics and more. It will also reveal trends, housing needs and opportunities for achieving the city’s goals for affordability and the preservation and enhancement of existing housing. Results from the study will be used to guide city policy and funding for housing and neighborhood preservation programs.

On Aug. 10, the city held public meetings to preview preliminary findings from the housing study and seek input on residents’ challenges and concerns related to housing. This forum is available for residents who were unable to attend the meetings and participate in the focus groups.

Michaella Lynch – Senior Girl Scout Troop 475 will tell us about her Community Pride project in Baylake Pines.  She built a Little Lending Library and painted murals on beach access walls.

Tidal Surge Gate Installation – 3 tidal gates are being installed along Cape Henry Drive.  The project has started, updates on impacts to West Great Neck Road will be discussed.

Flag Pole Installation – 4 sets of (4) flag poles have been installed in the Bayfront area.  Learn what the BAC plans for these poles.

Parking on Shore Drive – Residents of Cape Story used City’s See-Click-Fix App to identify possible safety concerns due to restricted visibility from parked cars.  Update will be provided.

VB Police Target Speed Enforcement along Shore Drive in Cape Story – Learn why the police have targeted this area and some of the surprising results so far.

Drive Thru Appeals Tent for Assessment of Personal Property

In case you didn’t know (or read the back of your recent automobile personal property tax bill) the City has a Drive Thru appeals tent for evaluating the condition of your property.  You may be able to save $25, $50 or more on your tax bill if you have a high mileage vehicle or one in poor condition.

Check here for the NADA assessment of your vehicle and if there is a reduction due to the mileage or condition, subtract that from the assessed value on your bill.  Then multiply total by 0.04 to get your tax.  The difference between this number and the Total Tax shown on your bill is your potential savings.

As a convenience to the taxpayer, appeals are conducted in a “Drive-thru Appeals Tent” located in the parking lot across North Landing Road from Courthouse Drive.  This annual service is available only after bills are mailed in May, weekdays between 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m., and on the last Saturday before bills are due in June from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m
