Old Business-
Community Rating System (CRS) – Update on the City’s progress in joining the HUD-FEMA CRS program that could save 5-20% on Flood Insurance premiums.
Proposed Marina Shores Condominium Development – Update on proposed development of 261 condos to take the place of boat dry storage and commercial building currently located on the site.
Proposed Commercial Development Near 7-11 near Shady Oaks and Shore Drive – Update on the proposed commercial development planned for the portion of land just west of the 7-11.
Shore Drive Storm Water Capital Improvement Project – Update on active CIPs 7.151.000-003 are active projects designed to improve storm water collection and removal in the neighborhoods east of the Lesner Bridge along Shore Drive.
New Business –
Bayfront Advisory Commission (BAC) News – Mr. Wally Damon will update us on the actions of the Bayfront Advisory Commission.
SDCC Vote on Proposed Shore Drive to Oceanfront Shuttle – Membership will vote on proposed trial bus service between Shore Drive and Oceanfront that will operate between May and September 2017.
SDCC Vote on Proposed Friends of Live Oaks (FOLO) Proposal – FOLO is requesting support to save the City’s largest Live Oak grove currently located on City owned property.
Light Rail Funds to Support Storm Water Improvements – City Council is entertaining the idea of redirecting funds appropriated for Light Rail to help make $500 million worth of storm water improvements. What do SDCC members think about this proposal?
Community Concerns and Suggestions for 2017 – General discussion of neighborhood and community concerns that may need SDCC attention. This is an opportunity for all to share information.

Live Oak Grove is located between the Virginia Beach Sportsplex and Virginia Beach National Golf Club.
Here’s the idea:
Friends of Live Oaks is asking you to consider informally partnering with us on the following project:
To permanently preserve the Virginia Beach Live Oak Grove as a Natural Area.
The City of Virginia Beach defines a Natural Area as follows:
A natural area is a municipal preservation area whose primary purpose is to preserve the indigenous vegetation and wildlife in order to serve as green infrastructure and as a scenic environment for Virginia Beach residents to enjoy.
Natural areas include areas for protection and management of the natural/cultural environment with recreation use as a secondary objective. Recreational use might include passive recreation activities such as hiking, birding, and environmental education.
Live Oak Grove benefits to Virginia Beach:
It is land owned by the City of Virginia Beach not yet designated as open space.
It contains over 100 live oaks, the Official City Tree.
It is part of the Urban Tree Canopy which is a key component in reducing the city’s stormwater runoff. The City has adopted a goal to expand the urban tree canopy from 38% to 45 % of the land in the next 20 years. That would include preserving what we already have whenever possible.
Its trees contribute to economic savings & environmental benefits.
Live Oak Grove meets the purpose of a Natural Area.
Future educational and recreational opportunities.
Friends of Live Oaks is spearheading the Project.
We hope that saying YES to permanently preserve Live Oak Grove is in alignment with the purpose of your organization and that you see that it benefits the citizens & visitors of Virginia Beach.
Activities for other partners could include promoting this among their members, posting information in their communications and social media, and possible attending City meetings to help influence the outcomes in favor of the Grove. Friends of Live Oaks will keep our partners up-to-date on the progress of the Project.
Time is of the essence since planning may be firmed up within a few short months.
