Most Important SDCC Meeting

Monday, 30 July at 7:30 pm, SDCC will hold its monthly meeting at the Ocean Park Volunteer Rescue Squad Station on Shore Drive. At this meeting, we will be honored to have Delegate Chris Stolle speak before our group. The assembled group will have the opportunity to ask our delegate questions that concern us most in this critical time in both our state and national arena. Come, hear our Delegate, and have a chance to speak about what is on your mind.

Additionally, I will have the  honor to introduce Ms. Grace Moran who has most graciously volunteered to fill the Vice President’s position until the end of the year. Many know Grace for all of her hard word, exquisite comments, and all the community projects and civic positions that she has been involved with and filled over many years. Pending her nomination and acceptance vote, I will most enthusiastically welcome her to our SDCC group.

The Pleasure House Point Stakeholder Mtg. (Monday, July 30 from 4:00-5:30pm) will now be at Ocean Park Rescue Squad at 3769 East Stratford Road, VB.

Apologies for the change but there was a scheduling conflict with the prior location.

The Pleasure House Point Community Public Mtg. (Monday, July 30 from 6:00-7:30pm) will remain at its original location at Baylake United Methodist Church Social Hall, 4300 Shore Dr, VB.

Identified as a top priority for open space acquisition for the past decade, the 118-acre tract known as PLEASURE HOUSE POINT has recently been preserved by the City of Virginia Beach with help from the Trust for Public Land (TPL) and in collaboration with the Chesapeake Bay Foundation. The local community, who’s vision & relentless legal work for the past decade, created the opportunity to preserve PHP forever.

“Eventually, what they come up with will end up as part of the science curriculum at each of Virginia Beach’s 11 high schools, said Venecia Ferrell, an instructional specialist for the school division.”

“Wesleyan Drive between Youlous Avenue and the entrance to Virginia Wesleyan College (College Drive) will be closed for construction for two weekends in July – weather permitting. Beginning Friday, July 13, at 8 pm, the road will be closed and will re-open on Monday, July 16, at 5:00 am. It will be closed again on Friday, July 20, at 8 pm, and will reopen on Monday, July 23, at 5 am. Motorists will be detoured to Baker Road and Northampton Boulevard respectively.”

The Closing for Pleasure House Point was yesterday, July 10th 2012.

Without a number of dedicated people in the community – who worked tirelessly for years – it would have been impossible for this legacy purchase to have happened.

Thanks to their hard work, the vast majority of which happened behind the scenes with little fanfare, this dream came true. Over $150,000 of consulting was generously donated since 2002 which achieved the result of developers receiving exactly -0- permits to build on Pleasure House Point.

Those people look forward to working with the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, the City of Virginia Beach and other concerned citizens and groups to ensure PHP becomes a leader in inspiring kids of all ages to achieve great things.

“Animal Control officers are investigating the death of a pit bull that is believed to have been poisoned with antifreeze earlier this month. Mirage, 2 1/2, started showing symptoms of poisoning after coming in from the backyard of a home in the 4800 block of Lake Bradford Lane June 6.”

“A fire that killed an elderly couple and damaged 14 condominium units off of Shore Drive has been ruled accidental, although the cause of the blaze is still undetermined.”

Bicyclist claims hit-and-run by small red car on First Court on May 20th

An investigation reveals the bicyclist was traveling north on First Court Road and the suspect was driving in the same direction when the vehicle’s mirror may have struck the bicyclist, causing the cyclist to fall off the bike.
