FRIENDS OF LIVE OAKS PRESERVATION GROUP DOLING OUT 150 FREE LIVE OAK SAPLINGS – SAT. OCT 12th

The Friends of Live Oaks group has been doing a wonderful job of preserving the City’s official tree.  Many of the trees they hand out were collected by local residents of Shore Drive back in 2005/2006.

The Friends of Live Oaks, together with the Virginia Beach Environment and Sustainability Office, will be giving away about 150 young live oak trees on Saturday October 12th from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the Linkhorn Annex, 1413 Laskin Road. As in the past, there will be no charge for the trees, but recipients are encouraged to become official Friends of Live Oaks members by purchasing a $10 membership.

In addition to giving away 150 trees, the group will also plant 50 live oaks along Marlin Bay, Shore Drive and Pleasure House Point to celebrate the city’s 50th anniversary

A WALK ON THE WILD (MARSH) SIDE by Mary Reid Barrow

In case you missed it, Mary Reid Barrow had a terrific article in the 9/29/13 Virginian-Pilot that showcased Pleasure House Point.

TALL GRASS HERE, scraggly grass there, tiny flower here, weird berry there.

That’s about all you see growing in the marsh unless you visit with someone who opens your eyes wide to the beautiful plants that live in the sand along the river’s edge.

A walk with Lynnhaven River Now and naturalist Vickie Shufer at Pleasure House Point in Virginia Beach did just that recently. Lynnhaven River NOW is a group that works to keep the Virginia Beach river clean, and Shufer is a native-plant expert.

Golf Tournament To Benefit OPVRS – Monday Oct 14th at 7:30am at Lake Wright GC

Froggie’s Cantina will host the 1st Annual Benefit Golf Tournament for the Ocean Park Volunteer Rescue Squad.  The event will take place Monday October 14, 2013 and  will help provide funds for much-needed emergency medical equipment.

Registration starts at 7:30am at Lake Wright GC in Norfolk.

Hampton Roads Solar Tour – Saturday Oct. 5th – 10am to 4pm

In conjunction with the American Solar Energy Society’s National Home Tour, Tidewater locals are opening their doors to shine a light solar energy systems. This free event organized by the Solar Group of the Hampton Roads Green Building Council consists of 2 dozen tour sites across the region and features a host of resource efficient and sustainable technologies in addition to solar. New locations on this year’s tour include a state of the art dwelling developed by students from ODU and HU, a LEED Platinum home on the Eastern Shore, and a solar concentrating steam generator in Norfolk.

For Shore Drive residents, 2 homes are conveniently located at the North End and were showcased in the Virginian-Pilot’s coverage of the tour.

One of the easiest ways to be a good citizen is to VOTE.  In order to make an educated choice, the more you can learn about each candidate the better.  In an effort to provide the community with the most information possible, Lynnhaven River Now has coordinated this upcoming forum.  Even though some of the districts are uncontested and you may not live in others, you can still learn about all the candidates.  No matter who is elected, you can still help influence the eventual winners to make good decisions once they are elected.

Swimming Advisory Issued for Two Locations on the Chesapeake Bay  

The Virginia Beach Department of Public Health has issued a swimming and wading advisory for two locations on the Chesapeake Bay: between Ocean View Avenue (5000 block) and Mortons Road, and between Rockbridge Road and Starfish Road. Recent testing conducted by the Health Department showed that bacteria levels in the water exceeded the State Water Quality Standards. The advisory does not affect the Virginia Beach oceanfront or resort area.

VB Audubon Bird Walk at PHP – Sat Sept. 14th @ 8am

The Virginia Beach Audubon Society will have a bird walk on Saturday, September 14th, at 8:00 am at Pleasure House Point.

 It is open to the public. We will walk the Preserve for roughly two hours looking, identifying and photographing birds as well as other wildlife in the area.  

The trip will be led my Master Birder Steve Coari and will include about 15 Audubon members.

Pleasure House Point Draft Master Plan to be presented at SDCC Monday Aug 26th meeting

Ms. Barbara Duke, Project Manager for Parks and Recreation will present the latest update on the Pleasure House Point Master Plan.

Last year 25 stakeholders worked with the City’s Parks and Recreation department to gather citizen input on what Pleasure House Point should and shouldn’t become.  A draft Master Plan was created and the stakeholder group disbanded.  The City has been working on the draft plan with final intentions to make it an official adopted plan for the natural park.   

Come out to hear the latest update on the Master Plan for Pleasure House Point and provide comments.

Virginia Beach Resort Hotel and Conference Center is hosting a Blood Drive on August 7th, 2013 from 1:00 P.M. – 7:00 P.M. The American Red Cross has notified us of an emergency need for blood donations but especially for A Negative, B Negative and O Negative blood. If you or someone you know is able and willing to donate blood please either make an appointment on line, call Stacy Day at 481-9000 to make an appointment for you or simply show up between 1 and 7 p.m. on August 7th at the Virginia Beach Resort Hotel and Conference Center. Every pint donated may save up to 3 lives. We hope to see you on August 7th, 2013!

The need for blood is constant and only volunteer donors can fulfill that need for patients in our community. Nationwide, someone needs a unit of blood every 2 to 3 seconds and most of us will need blood in our lifetime.

City Engineers Present “Eastern Shore Dr. Interim Drainage Improvement Proposal”

On Thursday June 20th at the Bayfront Advisory Committee (BAC), City Engineers presented the “Eastern Shore Drive Interim Drainage Improvement Proposal”.  This proposal was the result of an engineering study performed by City engineers and engineering consultant Kimley-Horn.  The study was performed as part of the community’s on going request (since 2009) to fix tidal flooding issues in neighborhoods east of the Lesner Bridge.  The presentation, studies and recommendations can be found on the City’s Public Works website.  Click here to access

The City’s Engineering results on interim flooding fixes has been summarized on Slide 33 of their presentation shown below.  This presentaiton will be made to City Council at which point they will decide whether to fund the interim projects.  Please note that the housing and garage impacts are based on a 4.0 foot tide occurence.

Return On Investment

  • Total Cost of Interim Improvements: $1.2 M
  • Benefit is some reduction in flooding frequency for:

– 5 houses

– 15 Garages

– 570 L.F. of Street

  • Comprehensive improvements are budgeted and initial phases could begin in 2016
  • A decision on whether to fund the Interim Improvements is needed

11 am-1 pm Hikers needed; dogs on leash welcome (please wear hiking shoes and bring hiking stick/backpack/binoculars as props if you have them.)

2 pm-4 pm Bikers needed (please wear helmet; mountain bikes and beach cruisers welcome)

4:30pm-6:30pm Beach Go-ers needed; Family groups if possible; dogs on leash welcome (please bring beach umbrella, raft, floaties, sand buckets, towels, beach blankets as props if you have them.)

Lynnhaven River Now Presentation on Long Creek Aquaculture Center – Monday April 29th at SDCC General Meeting

Lynnhaven River Now will be the special guest speaker

at the Monday April 29th General Meeting of SDCC

 

Karen Forget will present their plan for an Aquaculture Center on Long Creek.  This sounds like an amazing project for the Lynnhaven River, our community and the City of Virginia Beach.  We hope you can come out and learn more.
