Police are looking for an SUV driver who struck an 11-year-old child and fled the scene Monday.
The child, a Great Neck Middle School student, told police that he was sitting on a curb at Greenwell Road and Delmar Drive waiting for the school bus around 8:15 a.m. when a large red or maroon SUV went through the stop sign and struck him, according to an e-mail from Officer Adam Bernstein, a police spokesman.

According to a dispatcher at 385.5000, the case is closed. They apprehended the driver.
Update 10.01.09 @ 3:16pm: According to WVEC article, driver is not apprehended. We’re waiting for a call back from the Police to confirm either way.

Lesner Bridge Replacement

The City expects to have the Lesner Bridge Replacement design at the 60% completion stage ready for public comment in early November.  Please visit this link to see the proposal as it stood on August 25, 2009. [97 pg PDF] If you are going to be living here to witness the several years of construction it could take, you really want to spend the time to read the PDF link. It’s worth your time.

Some early comments include:
Residents of 3556 have observed that the proposal has assigned that the railings and light poles be blue.  They would prefer that the color be muted to blend better with the surrounding topography.  SDCC will post the date, time and location of the unveiling of the design when it is available, but in the interim, please take a moment to review what is currently in the works.

The Editor views the design & construction of the replacement for the Lesner Bridge as an incredible opportunity to make this a model for public works projects by building in cutting edge green technologies. Working with FIGG, renowned as an international premier bridge builder, leveraging our unique local talent, like the Military, topography & geography, like the Ches Bay & Lynnhaven Watershed, Virginia Beach could leverage the opportunity of replacing this bridge into something great. One idea – the power for the bridge itself could be designed to be “off the grid” using, as an example, wave technologies. Local universities could use the bridge, under the appropriate supervision, as a “lab” to test various wind & wave energy production techniques.

The following was received by our neighbor in the 2100 block of East Kendall, who was the victim of the break-in Monday night.

“The police came over again today and the officer had stated that there was another laptop theft around here on that Monday as well.  day. The person simply came in the unlocked door, grabbed the laptop and stole it.  Again, the people were home when this occurred.  I don’t know any further details other than the house was on Shore Dr. around here, but the police are definitely pursuing this as it’s a bit alarming that someone is doing this.”

Clearly, we have to lock our doors/windows, even when you are at home.  And if you have important info on your laptop, back it up!

If anyone has more info on the other stolen laptop, please forward the info so we can get it out to the community.

Forum Speakers: F.B.I., Virginia Beach Police Intelligence Unit, Youth Opportunities Team, Virginia Beach Sheriff’s Office and the Youth of the Community

This special educational, training, and informational Forum is in collaboration with many Religious Groups, Business Associations, Civic Groups, Governmental Offices, Parents, Schools of Education, and law enforcement agencies.

A local pastor, Virginia Beach resident, and business owner, Aaron Wheeler, Jr., will provide a venue for law enforcement agencies, and other organizations to address the public’s questions and concerns related to gangs, violence, and crime in Virginia Beach.  An invitation is extended to anyone interested in identifying strategies and working together for a solution to the issues.

This is not an FBI or Virginia Beach Police Department sponsored event; however, the FBI and several Virginia Beach Police officers will be on the panel to address questions about law enforcement’s role in gang prevention.

Monday night, Mary Richmond, from the City of Virginia Beach’s Waste Management recycling division, will give you some surprising facts.  Then SPSA’s Tom Kreidel will help us find the easiest way to keep household hazardous materials out of our environment, especially our precious Chesapeake Bay.

I received this email late last night from a neighbor in the 2100 Block of East Kendall

“Wanted to send this along to you so that you can alert the rest of the neighbors.  This evening at around 11:30’ish pm (approx timeframe) someone broke into our house while we were here.  A window screen was sliced, and the person entered our house through the window.  We believe the dogs might’ve scared the person(s) off, but we did have a lap-top stolen.  The police came out and we filed a police report. We have no other information, but just wanted to raise awareness.”

The vehicle in the attached picture has been associated with recent gang activity in the neighborhood. Be on the lookout for suspicious activity and call the police if you witness anything illegal happening.

“Dear Neighborhood Watch,
I understand that our children really need a place to play and
ride their bikes.  However I am very worried that we may have a repeat
bike accident as we had on Beech about a year ago.  I need for everyone to know
that there are some very young children about ages 4-7 riding their bikes in an unsafe way
without supervision on Beech St.  On Saturday one of these children about age 4 or 5 years old steered their
bike in front of my moving car. I had to slam on the brakes. Then he stayed
there daring me to move forward. I am really very worried that someone else
may not see them or stop.  So parents would you please watch your very
young children when they are out on the street and give them instruction on bike riding safety?
I am sure we can work together to make this a safer neighborhood for everyone.

For those who missed last night’s Civic Association Meeting, Detective Dewberry of the 2nd Precinct gave a very informative talk about the crimes in our neighborhood over Labor Day weekend.  Several juveniles have been arrested, 2 from our neighborhood, and have admitted to three house break ins, mailbox vandalism and car window breakage.  They teamed up with juveniles from other neighborhoods and went on a spree including stealing beer from a 7-11 and stealing baseball bats from Cox High School.  The parents were very cooperative.  The new house on Maple St. sustained approximately $20,000 – $30,000 damage and the other had various items stolen which will likely be recovered.  If any crimes from Sept 5 have not been reported, please contact Det. Dewberry at 385-2700.  You can also contact Det. Dewberry for questions pertaining to the crimes in our neighborhood.  Our Crime Prevention Officer, MPO Helen Gillespie was also present and talked to us about solicitors.  She showed us a solicitors permit and will send us a copy for insertion in the Skipjack.
