SDCC GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING JANUARY 30, 2006

    Minutes:

      1. President Todd Solomon called the meeting to order at 7:30 pm.  Forty-seven members and guests were present.

      2. Tom Retnauer of Retnauer Associates made a presentation on his proposed 80-unit condo development on the west side of the WaWa store on Shore Drive.  Sandra Baynes, Public Relations, Ed Mason, Project Manager, and Jason Howe, Architect assisted him.

Adopt-A-Highway signs finally up. Yea!

The Adopt-A-Highway signs are finally up, eastbound at base of Lesner Bridge and westbound at West Great Neck.

SDCC & Starbucks are partners.

House will be voting on HB1211, the ‘Stop for Pedestrians Bill’

The House votes Tuesday on the ‘Stop for Pedestrians Bill’ according to Elizabeth L. Jones, an Aide to Councilman Rob Krupicka of the City of Alexandria who has been keeping us up to date on this bill has it has moved thru the Senate & the House.

The Senate has already passed the Bill.

House Transportation Committee has passed it, so the full House will vote on the Bill on Tuesday.

Mardi Gras fund raiser for victims of Katrina to be written up in Beacon

I would like to thank you from the bottom of my heart and on behalf of my family and all the victims of Katrina. Because of your e-mail, the Beacon is doing an article on the Fund Raiser. With your help and that of other “Guardian Angels”, I believe we will sell out! Again, thank you!

      1. President Todd Solomon called the meeting to order at 7:40 pm.  Seventeen members and guests were present.

Eye toward selling exploration leases to energy companies by 2011 off the coast of Virginia

?As Yogi Berra used to say, ‘Include me out,?? Scott said Thursday. ?I noticed last week we were supposed to be getting away from oil dependence. I guess that didn?t last long.?

Personally, I agree. Seems like the kind of idea an addict would have trying to find their next ‘fix’ as opposed to working harder on trying to quit the ‘drug’.

GM of WVEC resigns, was arrested for DUI on Shore Drive recently

The president and general manager of WVEC-TV was arrested early Friday morning January 27th on suspicion of drunken driving in the 3200 block of Shore Drive. Article in Pilotonline.com.

Mardi Gras Fund Raising Event for Katrina victims

The following Mardi Gras Fund Raising Event is being organized and sponsored by a local resident of The Landings. The proceeds will go toward helping hurricane victims.  Looks like a fun time and for a good cause.  If you hadn’t heard, just this week, the funding for displaced victims to stay in hotels has expired.  They can still use our support.

The event is $15 will be held Sunday Feb 26th at 4:00pm in Stepping Out at Hilltop Shopping Center.

Full Senate & House Transportation Committee pass bills to improve pedestrian safety

The full Senate passed the amended Pedestrian Bill, SB233. 

This morning, the House Transportation Committee passed, on a 12 to 6 vote, the original bill, HB1211.

The House Transportation Committee will be considering HB 1211 (the House version, which as yet is unchanged), on Thursday morning.

The Virginia Beach Police Department, Cox Communications, the Oxygen Network, and the VA Bch Parks and Recreation have partnered together to provide two free Fight Like a Girl workshops for participants ages 12 and up.

The hearing for the proposed 80+ unit project next to Wawa’s was deferred until after the Shore Drive Safety Task Force’s recommendations.

Pedestrian signal improvements - Shore Drive east of Lesner Bridge

Mike Shahsiah, P.E.,  Senior Traffic Engineer, provided us with some recent safety improvements that’ve been completed on Shore Drive east of the Lesner Bridge.

Remember the speed study requested for Shore Drive between the CBBT overpass and First Landing State Park?

U-Turns clash with right turns at Pleasure House & Shore Drive

Because it is the major artery, Shore Drive gets a lot more green signal time than Pleasure House. That means that, in the morning, Young, Sessler and scores of others turn right on red to get onto Shore Drive.

State Bill to improve pedestrian safety working it’s way through the House & Senate

Elizabeth L. Jones, an Aide to Councilman Rob Krupicka of the City of Alexandria, has been keeping us informed of pending legislation to change Virginia’s existing Pedestrian Safety Law.
